Ota
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located in Nishi-Magome, Ota stands out for offering both Kanto- and Kansai-style broths for its hot soba, paired with crisp tempura like garland chrysanthemum and a hearty lineup of mini rice bowl sets.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Handing your meal ticket across the counter at Ota usually comes with a simple question: "Kanto style, or Kansai style?" That choice sets the tone for the meal. Even within the same bowl of hot soba, diners can choose between two distinct broth profiles: a robust, dark-soy Kanto style balanced with clean dashi, or a paler, gentler Kansai style. Being able to tailor the soup base to the day's mood is one of the shop's greatest appeals. The topping selection is equally generous, from fragrant, oversized garland chrysanthemum (shungiku) tempura to fluffy chikuwa fish-cake tempura and tender eggplant, all ready to soak up the savoury broth.
For a more substantial meal, the set menus paired with mini rice bowls are a dependable option. Offerings mirror the satisfying variety of a classic neighbourhood diner: the pork bowl set featuring thinly sliced meat pan-fried in a sweet-savoury sauce that calls for plenty of rice, a squid tempura donburi set that includes eggplant tempura, as well as staples like the mini katsudon and mini curry rice sets. Adding a simple inari sushi studded with white sesame seeds makes for an easy way to round out the spread.
Ordering is done via a cash-only ticket vending machine inside, after which you hand over your ticket and take a numbered call slip in casual self-service fashion. In addition to ground-floor seating, climbing the stairs to the second floor reveals counter and table seating overlooking the street outside, where nostalgic background music makes the wait feel unhurried. Because dishes are prepared to order, it can take a few minutes before your number is called, but it remains an easy, comforting destination when looking for a warm, unpretentious meal near Nishi-Magome Station.
